CBeebies Bedtime Stories chair comes to Sandwell   20  MARCH 2024 Sandwell libraries have been gifted one of the iconic CBeebies Bedtime Stories chairs thanks to a collaboration with BookTrust. The chair will be located in Central Library, West Bromwich, for the next few months before beginning a tour around other libraries in Sandwell later this year. CBeebies Bedtime Stories legacy reading corners are being introduced at libraries in Sandwell, Leeds, Blackpool, Hartlepool, Leicester, Brent and Somerset. The partnership between BookTrust and CBeebies Bedtime Stories will see the iconic CBeebies Bedtime Stories yellow chair being permanently donated to Sandwell Libraries, along with CBeebies books, stickers, and merchandise. Sandwell Council launches new Animal Welfare Charter   20  MARCH 2024 Sandwell Council has launched a new Animal Welfare Charter aimed at safeguarding and protecting wildlife and pets across the borough. The charter draws inspiration from the RSPCA’s charter and encompasses a range of principles and guidelines designed to protect animals and their rights. It reflects the council’s dedication to fostering a culture of respect, empathy and responsibility for animals across Sandwell. Key provisions of the Animal Welfare Charter include the five basic welfare needs: the need for a suitable environment, the need for a suitable diet, the need to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns, the need to be housed with, or apart from, other animals, and the need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury, and disease.   Sandwell Council and Hall Green Primary School lead safer parking campaign  18  MARCH 2024 School children of Hall Green Primary School in West Bromwich are raising awareness and encouraging responsible parking around their school, particularly at the start and end of the school day. Sandwell Council’s Road Safety team has delivered assemblies to pupils to make them aware of the concerns around the school area, such as parking on pavements. The pupils have created banners and signs which have been placed around the school area to encourage drivers to park responsibly and safely for the benefit of the community.   Children of Our Lady & St Hubert's Catholic Primary School raise awareness of safer school parking    20 MArch 2024 School children of Our Lady & St Hubert's Catholic Primary School in Oldbury are raising awareness and encouraging responsible parking around their school. The primary school is located on a red route, which means no stopping, however some drivers are choosing to stop and park illegally. Sandwell Council’s Road Safety Team has delivered assemblies to pupils to make them aware of the concerns and to remind the children to be vigilant and follow road safety rules on their journeys to and from school. The pupils have created a banner for the school railing and signs which have been placed on lighting columns near the school area to encourage drivers to respect the red route and park legally and responsibly.     Official opening of Central Saint Michael's Sandwell Science, Engineering & Manufacturing Centre in West Bromwich   19 MARCH 2024 Sandwell College hosted an opening ceremony today to formally celebrate the opening of the Central Saint Michael's Sandwell Science, Engineering & Manufacturing Centre in West Bromwich. Colleagues from Sandwell Council, the West Bromwich Town Deal Board Chair and DLUHC Towns Fund Central Team, were invited to the opening ceremony, alongside local employers and the Black Country Chamber of Commerce. Since opening its doors in September 2023, more than 220 students are now able to enjoy their learning at the new facility on West Bromwich High Street, and as the centre establishes itself more opportunities for students will follow.     British Weightlifting event comes to Sandwell's Oldbury Academy   14 MARCH 2024 Oldbury Academy, in collaboration with British Weightlifting, will host three events this Saturday (16th March) - continuing the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games legacy. The competition events include the Oldbury Academy Junior Open from 10am - 11am, the British Weightlifting Para Powerlifting Open from 12 noon - 1:30pm, and the Oldbury Olympic Weightlifting Open - also known as the Oldbury Spring Open - from 1:40pm - 6pm. At the core of the competition is the continuation of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Legacy programme, which aims to create a healthier, happier, and more prosperous West Midlands. All are welcome to attend the event and watch the competitions, and tickets cost £2 and will be available to purchase on the door.
