American country band 'The Highway Junkies' welcomed hundreds of people at Newark Marketplace for the Christmas light switch-on and firework display.
Hosted by Newark Town Council, the annual event saw an array of entertainment, including artisan produce, live music, and carnival rides.
This was the first time I had attended this event, and with the backdrop of the historic marketplace and Town Hall, there was a lively atmosphere. The tight cobbled streets and alleyways were filled with people, although it was busy everyone looked happy and in the festive spirit.
As well as the market stalls and festive lights, there was live music from local and guest performers. Unlike their usual country songs, 'The Highway Junkies' performed country-twists of classic Christmas songs, including a fresh take on George Michael's "Last Christmas".
As this was unlike the traditional carols, like those performed by the Mount Church of England Primary School Choir, I really enjoyed it.
The Christmas Market was a feast for the senses. Many of the stalls were selling hand-made Christmas decorations and food, as well as artisan foods. The smell of hotdogs, and gingerbread cookies filled the air. The sounds of children's laughter and Christmas songs, like "Last Christmas", added to the atmosphere and really got me in the festive mood. The only thing that was missing was actual snow!
Newark Town Council said,
Ultimately at what is a terribly difficult time for many, we are pleased to be able to put on an event that supports local independent market traders and hope that the footfall through the town helped to boost business for a number of our town centre shops and hospitality venues.
The lights were switched on by Newark Town Mayor, Laurence Goff, which was followed by the much anticipated annual firework display.
Unknown to me and the hundreds of visitors in the Market Square, Newark Town Council had relocated the firework display, which usually takes place on the roof of the historic Town Hall.
Instead, the fireworks were released in the grounds of nearby Newark Castle. For me it was the loudest and brightest firework display I've ever seen. Rockets and Roman Candles illuminated the sky red and green, and the booms ricocheted off the buildings.
A regular part of the British Christmas calendar is attending a local Christmas market. Over the years, I have attended the annual Birmingham Christmas Market, which this year has been voted in the UK's top 3 Christmas markets.
However, the Birmingham Christmas Market has always been overpriced, and far too busy for my liking. This is why Newark Christmas Market and light switch-on has become my new favourite.
