19-year-old pleads guilty to drink driving
18 OCTOBER 2022A 19-year-old man has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to supply a specimen of breath, Worcester Magistrates Court has heard.
Nathan Dance, an unemployed Birmingham man, was arrested at the scene on the 29th September 2022, after a road traffic collision on the A44 and A40 roundabout near Worcester.
Mark Turnbull, defending, said that Dance had been drinking due to his failing relationship with his girlfriend.
After drinking four cans of beer, he decided to drive to the shops to purchase more. It was 2AM and raining.
The defendant's Ford Fiesta car collided into a lamppost after misjudging the roundabout, and a passing ambulance saw the incident and reported it to police.
The court heard that upon police arrival, the 19-year-old refused to provide a specimen at the roadside to officers and refused again at the police station after being arrested.
Mr. Turnbull said, "he can't explain why he refused", further adding that Dance "has no previous convictions and at the time his decision making was impaired.".
Dance was sentenced to a 12-month community order, ordered to undertake 100 hours of unpaid work as well as an alcohol rehabilitation course, and disqualified from driving for two years.
The Magistrate Chairman said,
Because you are a fit young man, you can repay your debt with community service rather than imprisonment.
Dance will also pay £114 in surcharges and £249 for court fees.
