Emails have emerged revealing that Google attempted to purchase Epic Games back in 2018.

In a recent turn of events within the ongoing Epic Games vs Google trial, a series of emails have emerged, revealing Google's former plan to acquire  large stakes in Epic Games.

The documents expose a project dubbed 'Project Elektra', in which tech-giant Google aimed to secure controlling stakes in Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, to influence the company's approach to Android.

As reported by The Verge, one email discussed a proposed package offering to be presented to BC, indicating Google's interested in the game studio.

The investment was seen as a strategic move to sway Epic's stance on Android, with the notion that a substantial investment could significantly impact the game studio's direction.

Phil Harrison, the lead behind Google's failed cloud gaming platform, Stadia, contributed his "high-level strategic rationale" for the potential investment in Epic Games.

Mr. Harrison highlighted the benefits, including increased game watch time on YouTube, the potential migration of Fortnite to Google's Cloud services from Amazon's, and the project codenamed "Yeti", later revealed as Google Stadia.

Notably, another Google executive, Dave Sobota, suggested a more ambitious plan: a complete buyout of Epic Games with the assistance of Tencent Games, which already had a stake in the gaming company.

Discussions reportedly revolved around a substantial investment of up to $2 billion to secure a 20% stake in Epic Games.

Despite these intriguing revelations, the proposed acquisition never materialized, leaving room for more speculation about what the gaming industry landscape might have looked like if Google had pursued this route.

The trial offers a rare glimpse into the strategic manoeuvres and considerations made by tech-giants in the intensely competitive gaming sector.

Since the closure of Stadia, players are being encouraged to upgrade the firm-ware of the Stadia controller to continue using the controller via Bluetooth.

The Stadia controller was one of the best parts of the Stadia platform, and former Stadia players have until December 31st 2023 to unlock Bluetooth on the controller.
