Dramatic changes for Overwatch 2 Season 9

Dramatic changes for Overwatch 2 Season 9

 09 February 2024

Blizzard Entertainment is making huge changes for the up coming season of Overwatch 2.

In their most recent blog post, Blizzard Entertainment have revealed dramatic changes to Overwatch 2 with Season 9: Champions.

The new season, which launches on February 13th, will see huge buffs to all hero stats, and massive reworking of Competitive Ranks.

Following Player feedback from Season 8, Blizzard Developers "have some big updates coming that will give you the opportunity to build on your skills and see how you progress through the Competitive ranks."

As the name of the upcoming season suggests, 'Champions' will see lots of changes to Overwatch's core gameplay. Unlike previously, Players will be able to view their Competitive Rank progress.

By displaying 'Modifiers', Blizzard hopes to provide Players with transparency into why they have gone up/down ranks in Competitive Play.

The biggest and most dramatic change that will come to Season 9, is the reset of all current Competitive Ranks. This will see all players of the game be reset to 'Unranked' at the start of the new season.

As well as resetting ranks, Blizzard are introducing a new rank called 'Champion'. This will become the highest achievable rank for Players. Blizzard said "This is the most exclusive rank in the history of Overwatch, and we're on the edge of our seats to see who will achieve such heights in Season 9 and beyond."

As well as the dramatic changes to player ranks, the ninth season of Overwatch will see the introduction of new Jade weapon variants. As with the current Golden weapon variants, Jade ones will be purchasable using Competitive Points.

Blizzard said "Competitive Points earned for winning and drawing a match have been rebalanced around this new progression system, which should make every match feel rewarding regardless of the outcome."

The new Jade weapons will cost 3000, currently the same as Gold, however at the launch of Season 9, previous Competitive Points will be converted into 'Legacy Competitive Points'.

Unlike some of the announced changes in Season 9, Players seem pleased with this change as Golden weapons will still be a rarity.

As well as competitive game mode changes, all heroes will received buffs in the coming season. All weapon projectiles (bullets) will be increased in size, theoretically allowing Players to hit more shots.

Blizzard revealed that "We're improving hit consistent by making both damage-dealing hit scan and travel time projectiles larger."

To offset the increased bullet sizes, all heroes will receive an increase in health. Furthermore, heroes will receive 'Role Passives', and passively generate 20 HP per second of not taking damage for 5 seconds.

Although a team-based game, Players will be able to rely on teammates less to heal during battles. Currently, self-healing is available for all Support Heroes.

Overwatch 2 Season 9: Champions kicks off February 13th, and is available on all major platforms.
