Nine Perfect Strangers: REVIEW
29 SEPTEMBER 2022
The highly anticipated eight-part show, featuring Nicole Kidman, aired on Channel 4 last night (28/09).
The show, based on the 2018 book by Liane Moriarty, is centred on the unlikely bonds between nine strangers who meet at a wellness retreat called Tranquillum House, but all is not as it seems.
In last night's opening episode, the star-studded cast, featuring Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Regina Hall and Bobby Cannavale, among others, all arrive at the retreat run by the ominous Russian business-woman Marsha (Kidman).
Each character's lives are falling apart, with Tranquillum seen as the only way "to make you well", stated by Marsha throughout the hour-long episode. The episode introduces audiences to Francis (McCarthy), a washed-out author clinging to her fading fame.
As she travels to the isolated Californian resort, which was shot in Australia, Francis meets the other characters who are making the same journey as her.
McCarthy heavily dominates the first half-hour, and her embodiment of Francis blurred the boundary between actor and character.
Nine Perfect Strangers continues on Channel 4 next Thursday at 10PM.
