Dudley Hippodrome demolished
22 OCTOBER 2023
The end of 125 years of theatre heritage came to an end as Dudley Hippodrome was demolished last Wednesday.
Demolition of the former Dudley Hippodrome, which one hosted comics Laurel and Hardy, was completed last week, marking the end of 125 years of entertainment on the Castle Hill site.
Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council, which owned the last remaining lyric theatre in the Metropolitan Borough, began demolition in August 2023.
Councillor Patrick Harley, Leader of Dudley Council, said
This is the final significant stage in the demolition process. Once the frontage is down we will really begin to see a difference in the Dudley skyline and be able to visualise the new university building which will take its place.
Tom Clarke, National Planning Advisor of the Theatres Trust, stated in their report,
We do not consider the Council to have acted within the spirit of its own planning condition and its approach is not one we have encountered before.
As part of regeneration work to deprived areas in Dudley and across the West Midlands, Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council in partnership with The University of Worcester, plan to build a new £25 million University campus for the teaching of medical care.
