Team Saudi Arabia wins the Overwatch 2 World Cup 2023 after defeating China 3-2.
The final took place at BlizzCon in California yesterday. Their victory over the Chinese team, saw Team Saudi claim their first ever victory at the games.
Saudi Arabia's victory marks the first ever win for a country from the Middle East, and also ends the dominance of the United States and South Korea.
Prince Faisal Bin Bandar, president of the Saudi Arabian E-sports Federation, said
Saudi Arabia's win of the Overwatch 2 World up and the acquisition of our first gold medal in the history of Saudi E-sports is evidence that we are on the right path towards achieving our goals of being at the forefront of E-sports globally and a source of champions representing the Kingdom on various international stages.
Prince Faisal Bin Bandar expressed his joy in the team's first E-sports victory and added,
The passion and collaboration among the players highlights the significant growth witnessed in the Saudi E-sports community.
The tournament, which took place between October 29th and November 4th, at the Anaheim Convention Centre, USA, saw a total of 16 qualified teams fighting for a crowdfunded prize of $365,000.
This triumph marks a historical moment for Saudi Arabia in the world of E-sports and highlights the growing significance of competitive gaming as a legitimate and respected form of sports entertainment.
The Overwatch World Cup 2023 has undoubtedly showcased the exceptional talent of gamers from across the world, and has solidified Saudi Arabia's position as a dominant force in the competitive gaming scene.
The final, which was held at BlizzCon 2023, also saw the Overwatch Developers unveil the newest tank hero, Mauga. Players can experience the new hero during a limited-time trial this weekend before his release in Season 8, due to take place in December.
The Overwatch Team also revealed new game modes, including a brand-new Clash PvP game mode, where players will visit the new Hanaoka map, inspired by an original fan favourite, Hanamura.
