An iconic 1930s cinema, has been tragically destroyed in what authorities suspect was an act of arson.
The former Gaumont Cinema, built nearly a century ago in Smethwick, became engulfed in flames on Sunday (05/05/24). The Victoria Suite, located on Windmill Lane, drew 12 fire crews as smoke billowed from the four-story structure.
West Midlands Fire Service, who attended the scene, have confirmed suspicions of deliberate arson.
Listed as a Grade II heritage site by Historic England in 2000, the former Gaumont was lauded for its reputation during the 'golden age' of British cinema.
A Historic England spokesperson said: "We are very sad to hear about the fire at the Grade II listed Mecca Bingo Club in Smethwick.
"The distinctive Art Deco building reflected the glamour of the cinema bringing the excitement of talking pictures to the area in the 1930s.
"It was a valued and characterful addition to Smethwick town centre and will be a big loss to the community."

Opened as 'The Rink Cinema' by the Gaumont British Theatres chain on 7th July 1930, the Art Deco cinema was later renamed 'The Gaumont Theatre' in 1949. Following its closure in 1964, the cinema became a Mecca Bingo Hall, and later Banqueting Hall.
