Japanese teenagers have emerged as the least interested demographic in anime, a recent survey conducted.
In a recent survey carried out by Dream Train Internet Co, Japanese teenagers have emerged as the least interested demographic in anime, marking a significant shift.
The study, conducted in January 2024, asked the preferences of 500 participants aged between 15 - 59. The results revealed a stark disinterest exhibited by Japanese teenagers, with 33.7% expressing no interest in anime, surpassing all other age brackets. Similar trends have been seen in Western audiences, with a shift towards an older audience.
The results by age group also found, that the generation with the most people watching anime was in their 40s. This revelation comes as a surprise given historically anime is tailored to the tastes of teenagers.
Japanese research company, Dream Train Internet Co, also revealed that the 'action/battle' anime genre emerged as the most favoured genre across all demographics.
However, the survey also highlights unexpected trends. Romance animes ranked as the fifth most-watched genre overall. Notably, teenagers were the highest consumer of the genre.
While the decline in teenage anime viewership in Japan may raise eyebrows, it also underscores the dynamic nature of audience behaviours in the digital landscape.
