Discord has taken action against the data-scraper 'Spy.Pet'
A week following the revelation of Spy.pet, a site that was allegedly scraping billions of Discord messages and putting them up for sale, Discord has taken action by banning associated accounts.
Last week, journalists at 404 Media, highlighted that Spy.pet was scraping and selling billions of public server messages, from popular servers.
Initially, Discord stated they were "investigating the matter." emphasizing their commitment to user safety. According to recent reports, Discord has now confirmed the ban of accounts affiliated with Spy.pet, leading to the site's subsequent 'offline' status.
In a statement to 404 Media, Discord said "Our Safety Team has been diligently investigating this activity, and we identified certain accounts that we believe are affiliated with the Spy.pet website, which we have subsequently banned", the spokesperson said.
"Based on our investigation, the accounts accessed Discord servers that were open and available for anyone to join or where accounts had easy access to a valid invite link. Once in these spaces, these accounts could only access the same information as any other user in those servers."
Allegedly, Spy.pet also mined Discord servers connected to Crypto-currency and Bit-Coins.
The demise of Spy.pet seems inevitable due to Discord taking action and potential legal ramifications. Potential violations include the EU's GDPR and USA's COPPA, particularly relating to the data collection of under-age users.
Discord has also hinted at potential legal measures, stating, "in addition to banning the affiliated accounts, we are considering appropriate legal action."
